Climate change is a global problem that demands local action to reduce greenhouse gases (GHGs). We hope these pages will assist islanders to reduce GHGs, find out what is happening on other islands, and support decision-making about the future of island communities.
The site will continue to evolve to meet your needs. We welcome your ideas for improvement and we rely on you to of climate change resources and initiatives in your community.
The current focus of our climate change work is becoming carbon neutral as an organization and amending 19 official community plans to include GHG emission reduction targets, policies and actions. The OCP amendment project was launched in an October 9th press release.
The design and layout of roads, buildings and communities directly influence GHG emissions. Because the Islands Trust’s primary responsibility is land use planning we are committed to creating sustainable and low carbon island communities through innovative land use planning and advocacy initiatives in partnership with other levels of government and local community groups.
