Ganges Village Plan - Harbourwalk

Come share your vision for the properties along the next phase of the Ganges Harbourwalk. A Community Consultation Event will be held at the Lions Hall (103 Bonnet Avenue) on Saturday, November 4, 2017 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Ganges is the commercial, social, cultural and institutional heart of Salt Spring Island. With the goal of creating a local area plan to guide future development, ‘Ganges Village Planning’ is a priority for the Salt Spring Island Local Trust Committee. In order to realize the longstanding community goal of a continuous harbourside walkway, the Local Trust Committee has focused the initial phase on completing the Ganges Harbourwalk.

PROJECT UPDATE: At its June 1, 2017 meeting, the Local Trust Committee (LTC) directed planning staff to prepare information materials for community engagement about the scale and type of development the community would want to see on the properties upland from the boardwalk.  This direction came following the LTC's receipt of a staff report containing preliminary development plans from the owners of the Ganges Marina.  These design plans show a more intensive form of development than would be allowed under Bylaw 491, which the LTC has to date proposed as an incentive to gain upland land owner support from the boardwalk project.  As such, the LTC felt it prudent to go to the community for their perspective on what scale of development should be permitted on these properties.  Community engagement efforts are planned for November 4, 2017.
