Water Sustainability

Project Purpose

The Salt Spring Island Local Trust Committee’s Water Sustainability Project aims to understand and address water quality and quantity issues on Salt Spring Island. This project has two streams:

1. Land Use Planning for Watershed Management

2. Coordination of the Salt Spring Island Watershed Protection Alliance (SSIWPA)

While these project streams are distinct, water issues are inherently multijurisdictional, so there is often overlap between the two.

Land Use Planning for Watershed Management

The purpose of the Land Use Planning for Watershed Management stream of the Water Sustainability Project is to consider the regulatory and policy framework that applies to watershed management in drinking watersheds on Salt Spring Island, and consider appropriate Official Community Plan and Land Use Bylaw amendments to address emergent issues. Read More

Coordination of the Salt Spring Island Watershed Protection Alliance (SSIWPA)

The purpose of the Salt Spring Island Watershed Protection Alliance is to:

  • Provide a framework for freshwater resources in the Salt Spring Island Local Trust Area to be managed in a manner that integrates and considers both human and ecosystem needs through integrated planning, policy development and recommendations for implementation by member agencies and organizations;
  • Advise on policies of regional, local, and provincial government organizations that are related to freshwater resources; and
  • Coordinate implementation of those policies
