Indicator Program

In 2001, the Islands Trust created the Measuring Our Progress Program to monitor progress towards sustainability and implementation of the Islands Trust object, based on the Islands Trust Policy Statement. The first Measuring our Progress reports were completed in 2003 using 2001 data. As Islands Trust has experienced difficulty producing subsequent reports, we are developing a new indicator program. The first report of the new program is the Summary of Economic Dependency Data and Trends within the Islands Trust Area.

Statistical information on the following topics is also available as follows:

Agriculture

The 2010 Islands Trust “Exploring Food Security in the Islands Trust Area” Report includes charts and statistics on agriculture in the Islands Trust Area on pages 20-28.

Housing

The 2010 Seniors Housing Analysis Report  for Islands Trust includes statistics on housing in the Islands Trust Area on pages 10-12.

Greenhouse gas emissions

Greenhouse gas emission inventories for local trust areas are available on the Islands Trust Greenhouse Gas Inventories webpage.

Additional updated information on indicators and sustainability trends in the Trust Area will be posted in 2013.

Protected Areas

The 2013 Protected Area Indicator Report reports changes in protected areas in the Islands Trust Area from 2003/04 to 2011/12.

The Islands Trust Indicator Program measures trends in Islands Trust communities, ecosystems and operations. It is intended to be a resource that:

  • Serves the needs of Islands Trust area communities and organizations,
  • Includes environmental, social and economic measurements,
  • Informs residents, businesses, planners and decision-makers, and
  • Furthers the mandate of the Islands Trust.

The Islands Trust and other agencies will use the data generated by this program to:

  • Assess progress towards preserving and protecting the unique amenities and environment of the Islands Trust Area
  • Inform decision making
  • Inform policy development and implementation
  • Support advocacy positions
  • Provide relevant public education
  • Encourage public engagement
  • Demonstrate public accountability
  • Inform allocation of annual budget and staff resources
