Programs Committee
Committee membership includes trustees appointed by the Council Chair with one Executive Committee member as assigned by the Council Chair. The Chair of Trust Council is an ex-officio member of the Trust Programs Committee.
Committee members elect a Committee Chair and Vice-Chair as required.
The Chair of Trust Council may appoint an interim Council Committee Chair if required.
TRUST PROGRAMS COMMITTEE is responsible for:
- Resource Management - promoting sustainability in the use of natural resources of the Trust Area;
- Land Conservation - promoting protection and preservation of ecosystems throughout the Trust Area;
- Water Management - promoting protection and preservation of groundwater and surface water supply and quality;
- Marine Environment - promoting protection and preservation of coastal, and deep water marine ecosystems;
- Sustainable Communities - promoting livable communities:
- with sustainable and viable local economies
- with housing that accommodates socio-economic diversity
- with regard for the carrying capacity of supporting island environments;
- Conservation Strategy - developing strategies beyond regulatory tools to achieve the Islands Trust's object; and
- Public Awareness/Education - promoting enhanced public awareness of environmental, economic and social sustainability in island communities and opportunities for their improvement.
In March 2010, Trust Council established a Policy Statement Assessment Task Force as a subcommittee of the Trust Programs Committee to conduct a preliminary assessment of the Trust Policy Statement and make recommendations regarding further actions.

Only adopted minutes are posted to the site. Committee business meetings are normally held four times per calendar year, and additional meetings may also be held.

Roles and Responsibility
The Trust Programs Committee provides advice to the Islands
Trust Council and management by:
- Maintaining a committee work program to manage committee
initiatives and Council referrals for quarterly review
by Trust Council;
- Developing guidelines, policies and models for use
by staff and local trust committees and/or Trust Council
as requested by Trust Council;
- Preparing recommendations for interagency initiatives
and feedback on proposed interagency agreements;
- Providing input to the continued development and maintenance
of a useful research and information system;
- Providing recommendations for legislation reform initiatives
and feedback on proposed legislative amendments and legislation;
and
- Maintaining a liaison with the Trust Fund Board.
The responsibilities stated apply to the following areas:

Trust Area;
- Land Conservation - promoting protection and preservation
of ecosystems throughout the Trust Area;
- Water Management - promoting protection and preservation
