On June 12, 2018, the South Pender Island Local Trust Committee (LTC) established a Community Heritage Register with the Church of the Good Shepherd as its inaugural entry.
Section 598 of the Local Government Act authorizes local governments to create Community Heritage Registers as a formal record of all the places, manmade or natural, that have value to the community. And while they do not provide legal protection of the properties or features listed therein, Community Heritage Registers can:
- Enhance the public’s appreciation of the identity and character of their community
- Facilitate public access to heritage information
- Provide a means of informing property owners of the value of their property to the community
The LTC recognizes that there are other buildings and landscapes of heritage value to South Pender residents and to the First Nations with a long and continuing history of life on the island, and we look forward to seeing the South Pender Island Community Heritage Register evolve in the years ahead as additional important places are proposed for consideration.
