On June 14, 2018, the Gabriola Island Local Trust Committee adopted Bylaws 292 (OCP) and 293 (LUB) after two years community consultation on Phase 1 of the Housing Options Review Project. The purpose of the first phase of the project was to increase opportunities for wider range of market rental housing options on Gabriola island in the form of secondary suites on lots 2 hectares or larger. Planning staff worked with the Advisory Planning Commission and the community to review policies and regulations pertaining to secondary suites for lots where accessory cottages were already permitted. Phase 2 of the project is anticipated to commence in the fall of 2018.
