SSI LTC Adopts General Employment Bylaws
At its meeting of July 28, 2020, the Salt Spring Island Local Trust Committee (LTC) adopted three bylaws to encourage socio-economic diversity and enhance community economic sustainability and security on Salt Spring Island. These bylaws – 488, 489 and 490 – were developed through the LTC’s Industrial Land Uses Project which began in 2012.
Bylaw No. 488 amends the Salt Spring Island Official Community Plan, changing the land use designations of existing industrial-zoned properties to “General Employment.” Most importantly, it identifies three areas of the Island where the LTC could consider rezoning applications to locate new general employment lands in the future. These areas are:
- Near the junction of Rainbow and Atkins Roads;
- Near the junction of Upper Ganges and Long Harbour Roads; and
- Near the junction of Fulford-Ganges and Beaver Point Roads

Bylaw No. 489 amends the Salt Spring Island Land Use to change current industrial zones to “General Employment” zones and expands the range of uses permitted on these properties. It also zones two additional properties for general employment uses.
Bylaw No. 490 amends the Salt Spring Island Land Use Bylaw to bring zoning on a number of waste management properties owned by the Capital Regional District (CRD) into alignment with their actual uses and to provide the CRD with greater flexibility to deliver a range of public services.
